Eating and weight problems primary affect women, but can also be problematic issues for men.  Such problems come in a variety of forms.  Emotional eating causes increased weight gain and leads to obesity.  Many participate in self destructive dieting with no desired lasting results.   A comprehensive emotional/behavioral intervention can be the most beneficial technique in achieving a healthy weight and lifestyle with lasting results.

Researchers estimate that 1 in 4 college women struggle with an eating disorder.  The two most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

Those with anorexic tendencies will have an intense fear of being fat, thus they hardly eat at all.   One may witness them weighing their food or exercising excessively.  They genuinely fail to see themselves as the way others view them and always feel as though they are “fat” and unattractive.

In the case of bulimia, the person doesn’t avoid eating, but instead eats large amounts of food and quickly expels it from the body through vomiting and/or using laxatives.  This is commonly referred to as “binging” and “purging”.

Warning signs of anorexia nervosa include:

a 20% or more below normal weight,

denial of ever feeling hunger,

excessive exercise regimens,

expressing persistent distorted body image thoughts, and

becoming withdrawn from social activities.

Warning signs of bulimia include:

display of frequent excuses to go to the restroom after eating,

eating huge amounts of food without ever gaining weight,

consistent use of laxatives or diuretics, and

withdrawal from social activities.
